WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome, sometimes referred to as a spastic colon, affects up to 15% of the population. It is a functional disorder of the colon, which means there is no structural abnormality, but the colon is not ‘working’ properly.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF IBS?

Abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, cramping, passage of mucous, incomplete evacuation.

WHAT CAUSES IBS?

There is a miscommunication between the nervous system and the colon. This makes the colon either too weak or too strong, too fast or too slow.

WHAT ROLE DOES STRESS PLAY IN IBS?

IBS is not caused by stress, however emotional stress may contribute to IBS. Many people experience nausea or diarrhea when nervous or anxious. Reducing stress may decrease the symptoms of IBS.

ARE THERE ANY TESTS FOR IBS?

There is not one specific test to diagnosis IBS.  There are many tests (blood work, xrays, colonoscopy) that, if negative, may help lead to a diagnosis of IBS.

HOW IS IBS TREATED?

IBS is not a life threatening disease.  By reducing stress and anxiety, the symptoms of IBS may improve.  In addition to stress reduction, behavioral therapy, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, and pain management.

For mild symptoms, dietary changes and caffeine reduction may help.  High fat foods and certain types of sugars are decreased.    Dietary fiber should be increased.

For more severe symptoms, a low dose anti-depressant may help.

HOW LONG DO THE TREATMENTS TAKE?

It may take up to 6 months to notice improvement.  Patience is key.

CAN IBS LEAD TO CANCER?

IBS does not lead to cancer or other colon problems.
