Diverticulosis is a common condition that affects 50% of people at the age of 60. It affects most people when the are 80 years old.

Only a small percentage of people with diverticulosis have symptoms, and even fewer require surgery.

WHAT IS DIVERTICULOSIS AND DIVERTICULITIS?

Diverticula are pockets that develop in the colon wall. Usually in the left or sigmoid colon. Diverticulosis means you have diverticula. Diverticulitis means the diverticula have become infected.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DIVERTICULAR DISEASE?

Usually diverticula cause no symptoms.

Diverticula, however, can bleed and are a common cause of colon or rectal bleeding.

Diverticulitis (an infection of the diverticula) causes abdominal pain, fevers, chills, diarrhea or constipation. Sometimes the infected diverticula can rupture allowing pus to enter the abdominal cavity.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DIVERTICULA?

The cause is not presently known, but the theory speaks to increased pressure in the colon. This pressure results in weakened pockets in the colon.

HOW IS DIVERTICULAR DISEASE TREATED?

If there are no symptoms, no treatment is needed. Some people will try a high fiber diet.

Diverticulitis may be treated with antibiotics. If symptoms become worse, or there are recurrent attacks, sometimes surgery is needed.

If there is diverticular bleeding, usually it stops on its own, otherwise surgery may be needed.

SURGERY FOR DIVERTICULAR DISEASE.

Surgical treatment involves removing the affected portion of the colon. This can be done Laparoscopically when elective. If emergent surgery is needed, sometimes a temporary colostomy bag is needed.

Patients are encouraged to seek medical attention when symptoms occur.
